Severe
Depression
Severe depression occurs when the illness is in its
worse stages. Too many Americans will not seek help for this
disorder until it is so severe that it takes years to bring
under control.
Each year over 15 million people in America suffer from some
form of depression. Unfortunately 2/3 of these people never
seek medical treatments. Historic stereotypes of the wild eyed
insane hermit wandering the streets motivate people to try to
cover up their problem. Wishing on a star won't solve severe
depression. The condition gets worse and those afflicted will
lose control.
Many sufferers won't admit they show the signs of this
condition. There is no reflection on you as a person because of
severe depression. It doesn't make you less of a human.
Depression is a disease like any other disease. Medical care is
needed. The normal symptoms of depression are multiplied in
severe cases. The intensity kicks up many notches. Social
situations and work become more difficult. Negative feelings
intensify to make you a total loner. There are no steps that
can avoid this illness. Treatment is possible. It's vital to
detect it early.
It takes some skill to diagnose depression from its symptoms.
Depression is associated with many symptoms. A transparent one
is that the sufferer will withdraw into themselves. Dealing
with other people becomes too difficult. Hopelessness,
helplessness and even remorse consume them. They are constantly
agitated and irritable. In the severest of cases those
suffering from this disease may feel that they hear voices or
believe they have received visits from the devil. At some point
many of these victims of severe depression will consider
suicide as a way of escape. Those affected by this illness need
the support of those around them and treatment that will give
them confidence once again.
Severe depression is a terrible disease. Normal life is no
longer possible. Losing the ability to control your own life is
terrible. Treatment is the only option. The weapons of choice
in the fight against depression are anti-depressants and talk
therapy. There are also many support groups available to assist
these individuals to adjust in society. Treatment starts the
process of recovery for people. They can once again gain the
self-control they once had. But first the illness must be
admitted and treatment sought.
