Depression Support
Group
Each year 17 million Americans suffer from the mental
illness called depression.
There are many various forms of depression. It typically
begins as mild depression and ends up, barring any treatment as
major depression. When it becomes major depression then suicide
is a real concern. The real problem is that most Americans do
not want to confront their depression. Being criticized as
crazy or insane becomes such a concern that they don't look for
treatment. The risk is, they think, a label of not normal.
Of course this is not the case. Depression is considered a real
mental illness. It is seen as another disease, like cancer or
heart disease. As bad as depression can be there is a cure.
Those who suffer from this illness do have options. If you
don't look for treatment, you can't be cured. You have to
identify the symptoms and then address the issue. It is not a
passing illness that will simply go away. Treatment is needed.
Different causes contribute to depression. It's known that
factors such as chemical imbalances, environmental issues,
emotional problems and even DNA can contribute to
depression.
There are many types of treatment for depression.
Anti-depressants are often prescribed to treat it. There are
also natural herbs that can be taken that have been proven to
help control the effects of depression. Medical professionals
can also treat the illness with talk therapy. A popular
solution for depression is the depression support
group often portrayed on television or in the movies.
You can find a depression support group just about anywhere and
they offer those that suffer a chance to work their problems
out. Those with the same illness work together to teach and
learn about how to cope.
More and more people are participating in depression support
groups. The draw- backs are that some are very shy about their
affliction. They refuse to talk with others who have the same
affliction. For many though, the opportunity to join a
depression support group allows them to share their feelings
and frees a lot of their locked up emotions. The more others
share, the more you tend to share. No depression sufferer is
alone in this. Consider a depression support group if you
suffer from this illness.
